What are counterfeit goods?

Any product that is illegally copied, falsified, adulterated in its composition,  and passed off as the original is a counterfeit. A counterfeit product may be fake,and or illicit.

What are counterfeit medicines?

World Health Organization (WHO) defines them as medicine which is deliberately and fraudulently mislabelled with respect to identity and/ or source. Counterfeiting of medicines can apply to both branded and generic products. Generally, counterfeit products may include products with the correct ingredients or with the wrong ingredients, without active ingredients, with incorrect quantities of activities ingredients or with fake packaging.

Why do counterfeiters fake medicines?

Counterfeit medicines like all other fakes are made relatively cheap because they contain no active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and are profitable than narcotics with lower risk of prosecution. According to Bernard Leroy of the Institute of Research Against Counterfeit Medicine (IRACM)“ trafficking medication can be a threat to society because it provides traffickers with an estimated 10 to 20 times more revenue than the trafficking of narcotics”.

The penalties in some countries are not deterrent enough but impose more lenient punishments on traffickers.
